A History of Art in Eight Subjects

Tuesday 9 – Friday 12 July, 11am – 2.30pm

This course will aim to look at the different and recurring subjects and themes that have been depicted in paintings across the history of Western European art. Each session a different subject will be explored following the long established hierarchy of themes in art as dictated by the art academies of the early seventeenth century. Beginning with the most highly prized subject matter of narrative and history paintings through portraiture and genre painting to what were considered the more lowly subjects of landscape and still life.
