Title | Ralph Dutton - The Life of a Collector |
The significance of Ralph Dutton (1898–1985), 8th Baron Sherborne, his home and collection are not widely known. Dutton was an author of numerous books on art and architecture and a member of several national art committees. His ancestral home, Hinton Ampner, is an important building in shaping 20th-century interpretations of the significance of the English country house.
The house was, in part, built upon architectural salvage, along with numerous artworks bought from great estate sales. His collection includes important examples of 17th- to 20th-century European art, including paintings, furniture, sculptures, porcelain and hardstones. Drawing on new archival research and extensive collections cataloguing, this paper will bring to life the man whose passion was for creating his beautiful home and impressive art collection as a setting for his way of life.
