What links Rubens’s masterpiece The Rainbow Landscape with the work of England’s greatest painters, Gainsborough, Turner and Constable? Discover the pivotal role 17th-century Flemish landscapes played in the development of English landscape painting, and see key works in the Collection close up.

On the surface, Gainsborough’s verdant woodlands and Constable’s billowing clouds all appear to be direct responses to rural life in England. However, our explorations will reveal that the English countryside was not the only inspiration for their outstanding renditions. When Rubens’s The Rainbow Landscape – now in the Wallace Collection – arrived in London in the early 19th century, both Constable and Turner took the opportunity to see it. What impact did this have on their work?

Explore the key themes through a contextual talk in our theatre, then experience Rubens’s The Rainbow Landscape and related artworks in the galleries, on a focused tour.
