Monarchs, Marriages and Mistresses

Date Monday 9 September 2024
Time 11.00-13.00 BST
Location At the museum (Theatre and Galleries)
Speaker  Colin Wiggins

This event has now sold out at the museum.

Discover how artists including Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and Peter Lely served the monarchy with glamorous portraits but also documented some less than admirable examples of royal behaviour. Looking at a small selection of works in a contextual talk and short gallery tour, we’ll learn how British history has been regularly enlivened by tales of royal marriages and illicit lovers.

About the Speaker: Colin Wiggins worked for over 30 years at the National Gallery in roles including Head of Education and Special Projects Curator. He was responsible for the Gallery’s Associate Artist scheme, inviting contemporary artists such as Paula Rego, Peter Blake and Ana Maria Pacheco to become involved in the life of the Gallery and to hold exhibitions of their work there.

During his time at the National Gallery he also curated exhibitions of work by artists including Frank Auerbach, Bridget Riley, Lucian Freud and Sir Anthony Caro. He has many publications to his name and has lectured widely in Europe and the United States.

Joining Information and Format: This course will take place in the Theatre, Lower Ground Floor, and in galleries throughout the museum.
