Weekend Masterclass: Caravaggio’s Chiaroscuro

Date Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January 2026
Time 10.30-16.30 GMT
Location At the museum (Learning Studio)
Speaker Karly Allen and Jo Lewis

Inspired by Caravaggio’s use of chiaroscuro – the dramatic effects of light and shadow –develop your skills in making tonal drawings from the human figure. You’ll learn techniques for observing and creating tone by drawing from paintings and sculptures close up, then spend three hours experimenting with quick-fire and longer poses with a life model, using staged lighting for sensational results.

Suitable as a first experience of life drawing or for those developing their practice, we’ll encourage the playful exploration of materials through guided practices and personalised support from our tutors.
